The ten associated teams of CONMEBOL participated, while the novelty was the participation for the first time of two CONCACAF teams: Mexico (which would arrive to the final instances) and the United States.
The championship was won by the then current champion Argentina. Goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea rose again as a great penalty taker in the definitions against Brazil and Colombia. In the final, Argentina defeated the Mexican team 2-1.
