North to the Daintree and Mossman Gorge
The rainforest north of Cairns is a long day's drive from the hotel, not a morning stroll. Here is the geography, the distances the sources give, and how to fit it round a stay.

Mossman Gorge
Mossman Gorge is the valley the Mossman River has cut through the southern part of Daintree National Park. Wikipedia puts the locality about 78.8 km from Cairns along the Captain Cook Highway and 4.7 km south-west of the town of Mossman. The Mossman Gorge Centre is the gateway to the valley, and from it a suspension bridge leads to a 2.4 km loop walk through the rainforest. This is the traditional country of the Kuku Yalanji people.
The Daintree beyond
The Daintree rainforest covers around 1,200 square kilometres and forms part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland, listed as World Heritage in 1988. Wikipedia places it about 105 km by road north of Cairns; Accor's page for the hotel says 150 km — the difference is which part of a very large forest you measure to. On 29 September 2021 the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people won formal ownership of 160,213 hectares of land from Mossman to Cooktown.
Port Douglas on the way
Port Douglas lies 68 km north-north-west of Cairns. Its Four Mile Beach has a stinger enclosure in season, which Douglas Shire Council says gives a high degree of protection against box jellyfish but is not stinger-proof; it asks swimmers to stay between the red and yellow flags and wear a stinger suit.
Doing it as a day
- Collect a hire car the day before, or book a guided tour that picks up in central Cairns — we have not reviewed tour operators, so compare several.
- Leave early. Merchant Cafe opens at 6:30 am for breakfast and coffee.
- Drive the coast road north; Mossman Gorge first while it is cool.
- Stop in Port Douglas for lunch and, in the cooler months, a swim at a patrolled beach.
- Be back in Cairns for dinner: Tamarind's last orders are at 9:15 pm, Soy Kitchen's at 9:30 pm.
- Mossman Gorge Centre to the hotel — the drive home, which is the one you will be tired on; reverse it in Google Maps for the morning. Route in Google Maps
- Port Douglas to the hotel — the shorter leg of the return. Route in Google Maps
Where the sources stop
Queensland's national parks site blocked our checks, so walking-track conditions, closures and shuttle details are not printed here. Check the parks service and the Mossman Gorge Centre on the day — rainforest tracks close after heavy rain.
If the Daintree is the point of your trip, some travellers split their stay — a few nights in Cairns for the reef, a few further north. If it is one day among several, the hotel works as a base: early start, late dinner.
