Cairns Casino Hotel Logbook

An independent guide to The Reef Hotel Casino — rooms, reef days and rainforest days, checked against what the hotel and public bodies publish.

Verdict · written 29 October 2026

Our verdict: the reef is the neighbour, the casino is the centre of gravity

The Reef Hotel Casino earns its place on location first. Whether it suits you depends on how you feel about sleeping in a building whose heart is a gaming floor.

What the hotel is

A 128-room hotel that calls itself five-star, wrapped around a casino that opened for trade on 31 January 1996. The complex belongs to the Reef Casino Trust, listed on the Australian stock exchange since 1994; the trust's operator, Reef Corporate Services Limited, was owned as of August 2026 by Iris Cairns Property Pty Ltd as trustee for the Iris Cairns Property Trust. Accor handles the room bookings and, after years as a Pullman, now lists the hotel in its Handwritten Collection.

Where it is strong

Position

The hotel's strongest card is its distance to the reef boats. Accor's page puts the Reef Fleet Terminal about 100 metres away and the Esplanade about 200 metres away, and describes the Cairns Convention Centre as a three-minute walk. For a stay built around early check-ins at the terminal, that distance is the single best argument for the hotel.

Rooms that all share two features

The hotel says every one of its 128 rooms has a spa bath and a private garden balcony. Standard rooms are listed by Accor at 36 m², junior suites at 54–55 m², the Exclusive Suite at 61 m² and the Presidential Suite at 160 m². For a city hotel those are generous starting sizes, and the balcony matters in a climate where evenings are warm most of the year.

Food without leaving the building

Breakfast at Merchant Cafe from 6:30 am, Asian dishes at Soy Kitchen inside the 1930s Customs House, pub classics at Flinders until midnight or later, and dinner at Tamarind, which the hotel says holds two chef hats. That spread covers an early boat, a family evening and a proper dinner without a taxi.

Facilities that fit the climate

A rooftop pool with views the hotel describes across Trinity Inlet towards Mount Yarrabah and the Nisbet Range, plus a sauna and a gymnasium. There is no day spa that we could find on any official page.

What to weigh before booking

How we judged

From published facts only: the hotel's pages, Accor's listing, public transport and council notices. No hosted stay, no ratings invented, no stars of our own.

Who it suits

Couples and small groups who want to walk to the reef boats, eat well without planning, and come back to a bath and a balcony. Travellers on a short Cairns stop who value being on the waterfront more than having a resort pool garden. Business visitors with events at the convention centre.

Who may be happier elsewhere

Families looking for organised children's activities, anyone who would rather not walk past a gaming floor to reach a restaurant, and guests who want their rooms freshly renovated — the most recent major upgrade we found in the trade press was the two-year refit completed around the Pullman launch, reported in January 2009.

The short version

The Reef Hotel Casino is a well-placed, well-fed base for reef and rainforest days, with roomy rooms that all share a spa bath and a balcony. Its trade-offs are the casino at its core and rooms that some guests find dated. If the location is what you are paying for, it delivers. Pick a Trinity Inlet room if the view matters, and ask our desk to check the room type before you commit.

Give us your dates and the room you have in mind. The booking desk of this site — not the hotel — reads each request, checks availability and the current rate with the hotel's reservations team or with a booking partner, and answers by email. No card details are asked for here, and a request is not yet a booking.

How this desk is paid: when a request sent from this site turns into a confirmed stay, the hotel or the booking partner that completes the reservation pays us a commission. Asking costs you nothing extra. How this site earns.

Thank you — your request is with our desk. We check availability and the rate with the hotel's reservations team or our booking partner and reply by email, usually within one business day. Nothing is booked and nothing is charged until you say yes.
