Forty-eight hours, one hotel, one reef
Two days is enough for the reef, one tableland or city morning, and two good dinners — if you let the hotel's location do the work. Times below come from the venues' own pages.
Hour 0 — arrive
Land at Cairns Airport and take a taxi or shuttle; Accor counts about ten minutes to the hotel. Check-in is from 2:00 pm. If you are early, leave your bags and walk 200 metres to the Esplanade.
Hours 2 to 8 — the waterfront
Swim in the free lagoon (6 am–9 pm, Wednesday from noon). Lifeguards watch it during opening hours.
Book your reef boat for tomorrow if you have not, and lay out what you need for an early start.
Soy Kitchen in the Customs House opens at 4 pm every day; the Night Markets on Abbott Street open every night.
Hours 16 to 30 — the reef
Breakfast and coffee; the café opens at 6:30 every day.
Check in at your operator's desk, about 100 metres from the hotel. Times depend on the boat — see reef days.
One operator's island boat is back by 4:30 pm; outer-reef trips vary.
If it is Tuesday to Saturday, dinner from 5:30 pm with last orders at 9:15 pm. On Sunday or Monday, Soy Kitchen or Flinders (18+).
Hours 32 to 48 — choose one
Option A: Kuranda
Train up the range on the Kuranda Scenic Railway (about one hour fifty-five minutes, per Wikipedia), cableway down on Skyrail (about an hour and a half), taxi back. A full day, so plan it only if your flight leaves late — or move it to day one.
Option B: the city morning
Cairns Museum on Lake Street opens at 10 am, Monday to Saturday, and in 2026 is marking 150 years since the township's founding. Cairns Aquarium on Florence Street opens at 9:30 am every day. Check-out is by 11:00 am, so either fit one in first or ask the hotel whether it can hold your bags afterwards — its pages do not say.
What we left out on purpose
The Daintree. It is a long day on its own — about 79 km to Mossman Gorge before you even reach the bigger forest — and it squeezes a 48-hour stay into a drive. With a third day, add it; see Daintree days.
BAR36's named shows mostly start at 9 pm. On a reef-day evening that is late; on your first night it can work. Dates are on what's on.
