Up to Kuranda by rail, back by cableway
The village of Kuranda sits on the range above Cairns — 30 km away by Accor's count. Two old-fashioned ways up make it the easiest big day out from the hotel.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway
The railway's operator describes a 37-kilometre climb of 327 metres across 55 bridges and through 15 tunnels, from Gimuy (Cairns) via Bubundji (Freshwater) to Ngunbay (Kuranda) — the operator names each place twice. Construction began in 1886 with nearly 1,500 workers, and the line marked 135 years on 25 June 2026 — the first passenger service ran in 1891. Wikipedia gives the trip as about one hour fifty-five minutes each way and says it runs daily except Christmas Day. (Wikipedia counts 37 bridges, the operator 55; we print the operator's figure.)
Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
Skyrail is a 7.5 km cableway from its terminal at Smithfield, in Cairns, to Kuranda, with two stations on the way at Red Peak and Barron Falls. It opened on 31 August 1995. Wikipedia gives about an hour and a half one way, including stops, over Barron Gorge National Park in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
Putting the day together
- Breakfast at Merchant Cafe from 6:30 am.
- Taxi or walk to Cairns railway station and take the train up through Freshwater to Kuranda.
- Spend the middle of the day in the village.
- Ride Skyrail down to Smithfield and take a taxi back to the hotel — or reverse the order if the train times suit you better.
- Rest, then a late swim at the Esplanade Lagoon (open until 9 pm) before dinner.
Both attractions sell their own tickets and set their own timetables; make sure the second leg connects before you book the first.

- Skyrail Smithfield terminal to the hotel — the taxi ride back from the cableway's lower station. Route in Google Maps
- Kuranda village to the hotel by road — if you drive up instead. Route in Google Maps
In the wet season
The operator promotes the waterfalls along the route, and the wet months between November and May are when they carry the most water. The same rain can make an afternoon in the village damp — pack a light rain jacket and plan an indoor fallback such as the aquarium or museum back in the city.
