Reef days from Wharf Street
The reason most guests choose this hotel is a block away: the Reef Fleet Terminal, where the day boats to the outer reef and the islands check in their passengers.

How the boats work
Day boats leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal at 1 Spence Street, next to the marina. Operators run desks inside the terminal where you check in and collect boarding passes, and each sets its own times. As one example, Sunlover Reef Cruises published these windows when we checked:
| Sunlover trip | Check-in | Departs |
|---|---|---|
| Reef and island tour | 7:00–7:30 am | 8:00 am |
| Fitzroy Island, early boat | 7:45–8:30 am | 8:45 am |
| Fitzroy Island, standard boat | 8:45–9:45 am | 10:15 am |
| Moore Reef pontoon | 8:45–9:45 am | 10:15 am |
Sunlover warns that passengers who have not checked in by 9:45 am for the later departures may miss boarding, and says its Fitzroy Island boat leaves the island at 3:30 pm and is back at the marina by 4:30 pm. Other operators keep different times — your ticket is the authority.
Green Island, the nearest island day
Green Island is a coral cay about 27 km offshore — roughly a 45-minute catamaran ride, according to Wikipedia. It is a national park inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park World Heritage Area. Most visitors come for the day; there is also a small resort. Captain Cook named the island in June 1770, and an underwater observatory has stood there since 1954. Glass-bottom boats and a semi-submersible are among the ways to see the reef without swimming.
The timing advantage of this hotel
From a room here, a 7:00 am check-in means waking at about 6:15, breakfast at Merchant Cafe from 6:30, and a short walk to the terminal. From a beach suburb or Port Douglas, the same boat means a much earlier start or a transfer. That is the practical value of the location — not the view.
Stingers and the sea
Between roughly November and May, marine stingers are a risk in the coastal waters of northern Queensland; Douglas Shire Council puts the season at November to May and notes that it varies from year to year. On the reef, follow your crew's instructions on stinger suits. On mainland beaches, swim only at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags.
The evening after
Boats that are back at the marina by mid-to-late afternoon leave time for a shower, the spa bath in your room and an early dinner. Tamarind takes its last orders at 9:15 pm, Tuesday to Saturday; Soy Kitchen serves until 9:30 pm every day.
If your reef day is fixed, put it in the trip notes of your request. We can ask for a room on the water side, and we avoid suggesting a late-night show the evening before an early boat.
For the hour-by-hour version of a reef morning, read the logbook entry Wharf Street to the outer reef.
