Wharf Street to the outer reef
A reef day is decided in the first ninety minutes after waking. From this hotel, those minutes are unusually calm — here is why, using one operator's published times as the clock.

The clock we used
Every reef operator in Cairns sets its own times, so we took one published timetable and built the morning around it. Sunlover's reef and island tour checks in from 7:00 to 7:30 am at its desk inside the Reef Fleet Terminal, 1 Spence Street, and leaves at 8:00 am. Accor places the terminal about 100 metres from the hotel.
Open the balcony door and look at the sky over the city or the inlet, depending on your room. Weather decisions belong to the operator, not you.
Breakfast and coffee on the walkway between the lobby and the casino. A light breakfast is kinder on a boat than a large one.
Booking confirmation on your phone, the bag you packed last night, room key.
Check in, collect boarding passes, listen for the briefing on where the boat is berthed.
Out past the marina and into open water.
Compare that with staying out of town: the same 7:00 am desk means leaving a northern-beaches hotel well before breakfast, or paying for a transfer. The hotel's location does not make the reef any closer — it makes the morning shorter.
Packing the night before
- Swimwear on under your clothes, a towel, a dry layer for the ride back.
- Hat, sunglasses and sun protection; the sun on open water is strong.
- Any medication you take for motion sickness, taken as directed.
- Booking confirmation and photo ID if the operator asks for it.
- Cash or card for anything not included on board.
Stinger suits
Douglas Shire Council puts stinger season generally between November and May, varying year to year, and its advice for mainland beaches is to wear a stinger suit, swim between the flags and use patrolled beaches. Out on the reef, the crew will tell you what to wear in the water — follow them.
A shorter option: the island
If a full outer-reef day feels long — with young children, or on a short stay — Green Island is a coral cay about 27 km offshore, around 45 minutes away by catamaran according to Wikipedia, inside a national park. Glass-bottom boats and a semi-submersible let non-swimmers see the reef too.
Coming back
Sunlover's Fitzroy Island boat, for example, leaves the island at 3:30 pm and is back at the marina by 4:30 pm. A hundred metres later you are in your room with a spa bath, which after a day of salt and sun is the second-best feature of this hotel. Dinner can be as close as Soy Kitchen in the old Customs House, open until 10 pm every day.
Sunlover tells day visitors who drive to park in the council's Southern Esplanade (Lagoon) car park or The Pier's underground car park, both entered from Pier Point Road, and to allow time to walk to the terminal.
